Reflection Commenting/Grading Criteria

At the start of each week, I will post a reflection on a topic we are covering or a link to a current event article on this blog. I will title this post in RED. You are expected to keep up with these posts (even if we don't talk about them everyday in class......).  Each month you are required to make 2 comments on these posts (though more are encouraged!)  Your efforts on these comments will make up 10% of your trimester grade.  These comments can be in response to what you read or in response to a fellow classmates comment.  Each month you can earn up to 10 points for your commenting.  Here is the grading criteria I will use:

  • 1-2 points - for a very short response where you simply pose a question or make a claim
  • 3-5 points – continue/add depth to the conversation.  Examples of this would be sharing personal experiences, injecting opinion supported with rationale (cite your source please...), sharing resources that others may find interesting or that would add to the discussion.
(grading breakdown adapted from Dale Basler's approach)

My hope here is to create a discussion board where all of us can reflect and collaborate on topics that we cover in this class.  Please feel free to speak your mind.  Just make sure to be respectful.  A good rule of thumb is: don't write anything you wouldn't be willing to say in front of me.  You are a very bright group of individuals; I am very excited to see what you can create here!
